Jazz- Jazz is a more energetic, free flowing style of dance. Students can begin jazz at the age of seven years old and may find some similarities between it and ballet. Not as slow moving as ballet, jazz takes the same steps from ballet and incorporates them into its own style. Jazz has steps that students learn and build upon, but it is also slightly more complex in the teaching of the style and that is why we begin with students at the age of 7. Jazz is a fun, upbeat, fast pace form of dance.
Lyrical- Lyrical is said to be jazz but slower. Lyrical uses the same moves from jazz but tends to be slower paced, melodic, flowing and using the words of a song to tell the story rather than the music. Lyrical is taught to those students who have taken jazz for three or more years and the two styles pair nicely together. At this point in a student’s journey, jazz and lyrical are put together and Hip Hop is its own class. Lyrical could be said to include the grace of ballet with the movements of jazz.
